How To Clean A Toilet Using Selden or Christyens (Clover) Products

← Back to Cleaning Guides

This guide walks you through a professional toilet cleaning method using either Selden or Christyens (Clover) products, suitable for both domestic and commercial settings.

1. Prepare & Protect

  • Wear gloves and eye protection — acidic cleaners can irritate skin and eyes.
  • Ventilate the bathroom (open a window or turn on the fan).
  • Remove any items near the toilet to avoid splashing.

2. Apply the Toilet Cleaner

Choose your product based on the level of soiling:

For Regular Cleaning

Selden option:

Squeeze Selden Act Original around the bowl and under the rim so it adheres to the surface. Leave for up to 15 minutes to dissolve limescale and grime.

Christyens/Clover option:

Pour or spray Clover STC around the inside of the bowl and under the rim. Leave for a few minutes to break down deposits.

For Heavy Limescale

Selden option:

Pour Selden React around the bowl and under the rim. Leave for up to 15 minutes.

Christyens/Clover option:

Use Clover Acid Wash 80 around the inside of the bowl and under the rim. Leave for a few seconds only.

⚠ Important: Never leave toilet cleaners on for longer than recommended — especially strong acidic descalers, which should only be left for a few seconds. Prolonged contact will damage the enamel on the toilet.

3. Scrub

  • Use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl, paying extra attention to the waterline, under the rim, and around the exit hole.
  • Agitate thoroughly to break down limescale and build-up.

4. Flush & Rinse

  • Flush to rinse away the cleaner and loosened grime.
  • If necessary, scrub again and flush a second time until the bowl is clean.

5. Clean Surrounding Surfaces

Use Clover Freshnit (or another pH-neutral washroom cleaner) to wipe the outside of the toilet, handle, seat hinges, and floor area:

  • Dilute as per instructions (usually a small amount in warm water).
  • Wipe with a cloth, then mop or rinse the floor area.
⚠ Safety & Surface Notes:
  • Do not use strongly acidic cleaners on acid-sensitive surfaces such as marble, terrazzo, chrome plating, or soft metals — these can be permanently damaged.
  • Always rinse after use and don’t leave neat chemical on surfaces longer than recommended.
  • Never mix different chemical cleaners together — this can create dangerous fumes.

Weekly / Maintenance Cleaning

For regular upkeep without heavy limescale, use a milder daily toilet cleaner such as Selden Ecoforce Biological Apple Toilet Cleaner to keep the bowl fresh and bacteria-free between deeper cleans.

💡 Pro Tip: Regular light cleaning with a biological toilet cleaner prevents limescale build-up, reducing the need for heavy-duty descalers over time.
